Scam? Jan. '07 Readers Write! Opinions?
As some of you may have seen in the new January Beckett "Readers Write" the Nolan Ryan Super Collector was trying to sell his Absolute Memorabilia Tools of the Trade Nolan Ryan Button Collection for $100,000! Being a Nolan Ryan Super Collector myself, and a TRUE fan, I was very interested and motivated by this collectors story in a couple of the previous Beckett's. I read the first article about him having the first 3, numbered out of 4!. Then when I read the next article, maybe a month or two later, about him completing the almost impossible #'d set, getting the 4th from another collector and his son, I thought that was pretty cool. I was happy for this collector and thought he was a true collector. I envied him in the fact that he had attracted Nolan Ryan's attention...a dream for anyone, getting to meet arguably the greatest pitcher of all time and having a picture taken with him. However, when I read that he was trying to sell this 4-card DREAM, I was very disappointed! I don't know the situation behind it, but the fact that it was possibly a money-generating scheme is a slap in the face for any collector, especially a Ryan collector. I feel bad for Tim Pearson and his son, the former owners of the 4th and final piece of that 4-card set. The fact that they gave up, what may have been a very sintimental card, not to mention VALUABLE!, for a greedy scheme is sad!
This really caught my attention, and I was wondering what other collectors thought about this. The only way I could ever sypathize with this guy, who gained this publicity from Beckett and Nolan Ryan himself, is for it to be a "life or death" situation. I truely hope this is the case, but I seriously doubt it!

I know...when I read the first article about this guy having three of four, I was like, that's awesome, what a lucky guy! Then I read the second article with him in a picture with my IDOL Nolan Ryan, I really envied the guy...But now, i'm pissed!
Here I am, almost 25, and I looked up to Nolan Ryan throughout my childhood and baseball career, and now with my collection scrapping for everything I can get, and this guy basically slaps me and my collection in the face...very, very sad!

I read that as well and I'm pretty sure I've seen him on Beckett's message boards too. It says alot about how I feel about that place and I don't blame you one bit for being pissed off,Josh. If I was Tim Pearson and his son,I'd be hella furious. I think the guy has lost all integrity as a collector by putting those on ebay, and I'm looking forward to more Reader's Write comments about this.

It seems sad and underhanded on the surface.. but its hard to say what else is going on.... maybe he needs a bigger house for a new kid? Maybe he has a kid that needs college tuition...

I can see where you're coming from Frank, but let's be honest, this guy's a tool who took advantage of a father and son's generosity period.Regardless of why he needed the card,he misrepresented himself to gain attention and find the other card.I haven't checked the auction, but I know if I was selling something that high-end,I would explain why in my auction, especially since I was just in Beckett bragging about my PC.Not sure if he states a reason for selling it in his auction.Just my humble opinion though.

I have them scanned, but when I try to upload them to photobucket, it hasn't been cooperating...I will try again this afternoon, and hopefully have the articles posted then.
Thanks for the opinions. I had a couple of people reply on some other boards, and some of the comments were rediculous...some people out there have no morales, not to mention very greedy. I hope I don't come across any of these people in future trades...they're in the hobby for the wrong reasons. This hobby can be for fun, or business, but hopefully "HONEST" business.
