What does Redshirted mean?

I've got a freind on Marist College's basketball team, but he's redshirted...what does that mean? While I've been a longtime learn-as-much-as-possible NBA fan, I don't really care for College hoops...

hey billy

well in all college sports...there are players that are given a redshirt...meaning they can't play for that physical year but don't lose a year of eligibility...look at Jason White at QB for oklahoma...he is a 5th(or 6th) year Senior...due to having a Medical Redshirt(injury)

so its basically just letting him play for the team...like practices and what not...just i don't think he can play in a actual game without losing his year of eligilbility

That makes a quite a bit of sence thanks..but...I don't think being a 6th year senior is very good!

Alot of times freshmen in college are "redshirted" (benched) in order to grow & mature as a player.They may get to play in games,but are ussualy limited on how much time they play in a season.

as an athlete... it normally takes 5-6 years to complete a regular 4 year degree
i play baseball at kennesaw state university and i was redshirted my frosh year at another school.
i have 3 years of eligibility left because of the ncaa 10 semester rule...you must use all 4 years of elligibility within 10 semesters of full time student status.
