Here's what we pulled in our box of 20121 Press Pass Nascar
Base Cards
There are 100 base cards in this year's base set, down from 200 last year. The regular base Cards are the main cards in the box and include several quality subsets. Card 1-36 are the Sprint Cup Drivers; Cards 37-49 are the Nationwide Drivers, Cards 50-60 are the Camping World Truck Drivers; Cards 61-70 are the Transporters subset; 71-80 are Front Runners cards; Cards 81-90 are the Head of the Pack subset; and 91-100 are the 2011 Highlights subset. With the more limited number of base cards, you’re sure to pull the whole set in one box.
The base cards have a sharp view of each driver’s face, often with a hat on. Each card identifies whether the driver is a Sprint, Nationwide or Camping World series driver. The quality photography is different from other sets that are more artsy or car focused . The flip side of the cards have interesting information about the drivers. For Kyle Busch, we find out that in 2008, he gave Toyota its first victory in NASCAR Sprint Cup series, earning him a place in history. The Transporter subset explains that transporters don’t just haul the cars and equipment from place to place, but they also serve as valuable marketing tools. The Front Runner cards highlight the key top drivers and information about their pole positions. The Head of the Class subset focuses on the leaders during 2011 and the flip side explains the driver’s key victories. The 2010 Highlights subset shows highlights for different drivers in a similar fashion as well as a nice card showing the four drivers (in addition to Trevor Bayne) who got their first Sprint Car victory this year. The base cards have gold, holo, blue and purple parallel cards for both hobby and retail that are numbered versions of the actual base cards.
There are a number of insert cards in this product, including Showman, Showcar and Preferred Line which are each 9 card sets. You can expect to pull 2 of each of these per box of these nice, holofoil cards which feature a quality photo as well as good background. You’ll also get one History of Nascar Hall of Fame insert in this product, and we pulled a Darrell Waltrip card. This set also continues the popular Cup Chase Contest Entry Card, with 18 driver possibilities, and one falls in each box. If the driver on the card wins the Chase, then after the season, you'll receive a pack of Chase Cup drivers, and if your driver wins, then you can get a Grand Prize Race used card of the winning Chase Cup Driver. Instead of the Winning Tickets from last year, this year, the set includes Snapshot inserts which are designed to look like older Polaroid snapshots that are tacked onto a bulletin board. You can expect to get 10 of these in each box.
Race-Used Card
You'll pull one race used card, usually a Burning Rubber Race Used Win card. We got a nice Kevin Harvick card. The card is a good one, although it’s the same style as prior Burning Rubber win cards. It's also possible to pull some really big hits, but at much longer odds in this box, including cards such as autographs, Four Wide cards, Prime Cuts and Ultimate Collection Cards. You can also pull some very nice autograph plates as well if you’re lucky, but we didn’t get one in our box.
Final Thoughts on 2012 Press Pass Racing Nascar
This is a very solid all around product that offers a little something for everyone, with good base, inserts and a guaranteed hit. As usual, it is designed to be an affordable box to attract all collectors, not a premium type of product. It does a fine job this year in meeting those all around goals at a very fair price. The boxes sell for about $70 so they're very reasonable on a per pack or per box basis.
