Press Pass Stealth 2010

2010 Press Pass Stealth –

This year Stealth returns a long time fan favorite and does it with Dale Earnhardt style. This year, Dale Jr. will be driving a vintage No. 3 Wrangler paint scheme at the July 2 NASCAR Nationwide race in Daytona as a tribute to his father, Dale Sr. Press Pass Stealth 2010 will feature the tribute paint scheme in packaging and an insert set featuring both Dale Sr. and Dale Jr.

Here's what we pulled in our box of 2010 Press Pass Stealth

Base Cards
There are 90 cards in the base set this year, broken down into a number of subsets. The regular base Cards are the focus of the box and have a good balance of cars and drivers. Cards 1-36 are the NSCS Drivers; Cards 37-50 are the NNS Drivers; Cards 51-59 are the "Maximum Velocity" subset; Cards 60-69 are the "Dual Operator" subset; Cards 70-81 are the "Command Performance" subset; and 82-90 are the “Under the Radar” subset. The biggest problem with our box is that we were missing 4 base cards including the Danica Patrick #41 card. Since Danica Patrick is a huge highlight in this year's cards, that hurts a bit.

The NSCS and NNS Driver cards consist of just over half of all the base cards. The cards have a nice clear shot of the driver and good information on the flip side. The back side also actually states "Stealth Base/NSCS Drivers/driver name" which leaves no doubt which card you have. The "Maximum Velocity" subset of 9 cards has a full shot of the car and some interesting information on the back---for example, some higher tech information about "slick paint jobs" for Jeff Gordon, and Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s keen sense of vision. The 10 card "Dual Operator" subset has information about each driver and their dual racing for both NSCS and NNS, and split card photos of each driver on the front in each different sponsor uniform and a good split car photo of each on the back of the card. The "Command Performance" subset has 12 different drivers in focused serious looking shots with some good trivia about specific NSCS and NNS performances. The final subset
"Under the Radar" has shots of the drivers in the car with headgear on and a car shot on the back of the card. The front of each cards shows how long each driver has raced in either the NSCS or NNS. Each pack of cards has one card that is a "special" black and white variation of the regular base cards.

Insert Cards

Stealth keeps the cards simple with only a couple of inserts to focus on. Each insert series falls 1 in 6 packs, and we pulled the expected 4 cars of each. The 9 card "Mach 10" series looks sharp with both the driver in headgear and car on the front of each card. The "Power Players" die cut cards have each driver posed and looking like a power driver. The information is an interesting combination of details about the driver and his impact in racing. Each box also brings 1 History of Nascar Hall of Fame insert, as expected throughout the Press Pass products this year (1 per Hobby Box) and we got a nice Charlotte Motor Speedway card.

Race-Used Card

Each box contains a race used card, which most often is a Battle Armor Card. We pulled an awesome 3 colored Race Used Sheet Metal card of Carl Edwards Serial #/225. It's a great card with the multi-colored sheet metal centered and looking sharp. The battle armor cards for the NSCS drivers come in 2 levels to collect. Ther Weekend Warriors cards contain two pieces of sheet metal (Cup and Nationwide) from one driver, and the Four Wide (hobby only) features 3 pieces of race-used memorabilia plus one OVERSIZED 4th piece; four unique versions to collect featuring Oversized firesuit, tire, sheet metal and shoe pieces.

Autograph Card

Each box delivers one autograph card, and we got an on card autograph of one of the lesser known drivers, Josh Wise. Wise is a 27 year old Nationwide Driver who has finished as high as 5th in a Nationwide Race. On June 3, 2010, JR Motorsports signed Wise to race the #7 JRM Chevrolet at Nashville. The Press Pass signings come in 3 levels to collect: Silver (#d to 99 or less), Gold (#d to 50 or less), and hobby-exclusive Bluse (#d to 10 or less). The huge hope is for a Danica Patrick or Earnhardt of course.

Final Thoughts on 2010 Press Pass Stealth

This product returns nicely this year. Although I miss the Chrome cards from prior year, the cards look good and are what Stealth Collectors generally expect. The boxes sell for about $85-95 and contain enough potential big hits to draw people in. The Carl Edwards race used hit in this box was awesome and the on card autograph is always nice as well. The value in these boxes would come with a big Danica hit so hopefully we'll see one of those come our way soon in one of these boxes!

Here's how I would rate this product;
  • Value = 4
  • Innovation = 5
  • Fun and Experience = 5
  • Rebuy Value = 4

I rate this product an "A-" for Press Pass!

Overall I like the look of the cards. The inserts look nice and I also like the variety of the poses. The one thing that I would change is the blue banner that goes across most of the cards. It seems to detract from the card itself. Aside from that they look great.

I think the basic card design is an improvement from the last several years Stealth product. The "Chrome" cards from the previous years hobby release never did anything for me. This design/technology (for lack of a better term it has a mirror like quality) however just catches my eye more. I particularly like the black and white parallels which just pops visually. As far as the inserts are concerned, the Mach 10 seem boring to me...but then again this can be said of previous "Mach" from the last few years as well. Battle Armor has always been a favorite of mine particularly because sheetmetal just seems neater then tires, pitboards, car covers, etc. I think Press Pass did a great job with Stealth this year and hope to see more improvements from them the rest of this year and in the future.

I really like the look of the cards and the Carl Edwards card really is amazing. The power player cards also have a nice look that really shows the drivers well. I would like to see some more inserts though or something that looks a little more special than just the autographed card and Carl Edwards cards.
