Here's what we pulled in our box of 2010 Press Pass Eclipse
Base Cards
These Cards are of course the majority of cards in the box and include a number of nice subsets. Card 1-27 are the Driver cards; Cards 28-46 are the Horsepower subset, Cards 47-64 are the Anthology subset; Cards 65-75 are the Party in the Desert subset; Cards 76-84 are the Elite subset; 85-90 are the “2010” subset. There are no short printed base cards, but there are a number of parallels, including Gallery Edition: Gold (Hobby); Gallery Edition: Blue (Retail); Fast Pass: 1-64, #d to 25 (purple foil); #’d to 5 (green foil); and #’d to 1 (gold holo foil).
The artistic look of the cards is a cool change and works well for most of the cards. The driver cards have a modern, painted, but realistic feel. The Horsepower is a significant sized subset focuses on the cars of the main drivers. The Anthology subset goes through 18 tracks and each card provides information about prior winners and highlights on the track. The Party in the Desert cards are all based on the Las Vegas Sprint Cup Series Banquet Awards show that rounded out last season. The Elite subset is a great idea that uses photo mosaic mini pictures for 9 drivers that combine to create the face of each driver. It’s definitely an artsy look, but unless you hold the cards back pretty far, it’s hard to really see the faces very well. The last subset, 2010 is an Andy Warhol type look with interesting colors and an interesting layout to show teams or drivers that have changed for 2010.
Parallels
The gold parallels are identical to the base cards but with gold lettering. It’s just an effort by Press Pass to make sure that there’s an insert or parallel in each pack, but otherwise not particularly special.
The inserts are more limited in this series than in other products but it works well. The History of Nascar Hall of Fame inserts continue as expected with 15 different ones being released with the product (and 1 per Hobby Box). Press Pass has decided to release a certain number of the Hall of Fame cards with each of their products this year. The Cars insert set has 9 different cars and they fall 1:6 packs. This is the only set of cards in Eclipse that really doesn’t seem to fit the artistic look of the other cards. The style is much different from all the other, painting-type subsets and would probably fit better elsewhere. The 8-card Decade inserts covers the elite, great drivers over the last decade with 1:14 packs. The 6-card Focus set includes Earnhardt, Stewart, Gordon, Martin, Kahne and Johnson. We got one of these. There are also a total of 100 different gold foil inserts that will be spread across 8 brands of Press Pass during the
year---10 of the 100 are contained in this product.
Each box contains three race-used memorabilia cards, usually either Burning Rubber race-used “Win” tire cards from the final 10 races during the 2009 season or Spellbound Swatches. The race-used “Win” cards were also in the 2010 Press Pass Racing. The Spellbound Swatches give you the opportunity to get a swatch from Earnhardt Jr. (car cover or firesuit), Gordon (car cover), Johnson (tire), Stewart (sheet metal), Edwards (firesuit), Kyle Busch (car cover), Keselowski (firesuit), Logano (tire), Petty (sheet metal) or Earnhardt Sr. (firesuit). Each of the cards is cut to spell one letter of the driver’s name, so that a collector can try to collect the driver’s entire last name. There are silver parallels variously numbered, and holofoil parallels numbered only to the car number of that particular driver (i.e., #’d only to 5 for Martin, but to #48 for Johnson). We pulled 2 very nice Spellbound Swatches, including an Earnhardt Jr. car
cover, and a Martin firesuit (which has a seam pulling out a bit), as well as a nice skidmark “Win” tire from Jimmie Johnson.
Autograph Card
Each box brings one autograph card, and ours brought a nice on card autograph of Ricky Stenhouse. Stenhouse is not exactly one of the premier drivers, but you never know what you’ll get. There is an opportunity to hit all the top drivers as well as 2010 Track Edition Autographs that are only numbered to 10, including Earnhardt Jr., Edwards, Busch, Gordon, Harvick, Johnson, Kenseth, Kahne, Logano and Stewart. There’s also a chance to get “Signature” series autos of the top drivers as well.
Final Thoughts on 2010 Press Pass Eclipse
This is an excellent middle tier product at a reasonable price given the number of quality hits. The boxes are selling for around $105 right now. The big, bold swatch cards look sharp and are significantly bigger than most race used in other products. It also offers collectors of particular drivers a good incentive to try to get all the letters for their favorite drivers to spell out his name. All in all, a very fun box to break!
