What I pulled:

Base Cards

The base cards feature a slick, side-border only design with the UD logo and player's name in silver foil. The photography on the veteran cards is excellent - the base set is full of relevant action shots, with no real slop to speak of. The player selection is well balanced, as always for the UD flagship brand, with a mix of the usual offensive and defensive stars, up-and-coming players, and backups that made an impact. The only thing I might have done differently would be a bigger font for the team name (for instance, I had to look twice to see that Randy Moss was listed as a Patriot, etc).

Rookie Cards and Parallels

UD promises one rookie card per pack, which is always a selling point for me! And again, the large number of players makes it nice for both those going after the stars, and the team or college collectors. My best RC was a Brady Quinn. I only got one parallel in the box (Justin Durant RC /99), which is about right for UD.

Insert Cards

I got a decent amount of inserts, which was a nice surprise. College to Pros features side-by-side action shots of the player from their (obviously) college and pro days, and the 1964 Philadelphia cards are a nice throwback to that design. I got Theismann and Curtis Martin in the Philadelphia cards which makes me curious to see the checklist - it'll be interesting to see how people react to the mix of players. Anyway, these inserts fit well with the UD flagship brand as they are very solid concepts that aren't over-the-top.

I also pulled a Chester Taylor MVP Predictor card... and a Colts Super Bowl Predictor card!!! Great shot here at winning a special parallel set of the 300-card UD base set.
  • College to Pros Andre Johnson
  • College to Pros Drew Brees
  • College to Pros Carnell Williams
  • College to Pros Shaun Alexander
  • 1964 Philadelphia Joe Theismann
  • 1964 Philadelphia Curtis Martin

Game-Used Cards

I landed two Rookie Jerseys - Paul Williams and Drew Stanton. This year's edition of the jersey series stick to a variation on UD's design for these sets from a couple of years back, which worked well for them.

Autographs

I received a Tyrone Moss Rookie Ink auto card - good design that flows well with the rest of the sets, and utilizes a clear sticker auto. A pic of the player in his NFL jersey, even if it's a training camp shot, is a nice touch.

Final Thoughts on 2007 Upper Deck Football

Upper Deck has put out a very solid product once again, upping the ante with the auto per box. I also like the rookie card design this year much better than last year's. They've decreased the number of packs per box and put in more cards per pack, so the boxes yield fewer total rookie cards which may help their value. In all, UD is continuing to try new things with their flagship brand while still maintaining the strengths that have carried it along year after year. Anyone that's read my reviews has seen me nitpick sets, but I can't find much in this case. I admit I was disappointed with the players I pulled for GU and auto (which could be said for any product), but the Quinn RC and the Colts Predictor brought the box over the top!

Product ratings & grade
  • Value = 5
  • Innovation = 4
  • Fun and Experience = 5
  • Rebuy Value = 4

I rate this product an "A-", a great effort by UD.
