Here's what we pulled in our box of 2011 Topps Gridiron Legends Football.

Base and Veteran Parallels

The base card in the release features a glossy finish on a thicker than normal card stock. The background of the card is set in black and white. The in action portraits are in color and really stand out in this release. The Topps brand is located in the upper left hand corner, the team insignia and players name are located on the bottom of the card to the right and left side of the card. The blue parallels are seeded 1 pack and are produced on a thicker card stock. In addition to the thicker stock the cards also feature a light blue shading in the background instead of the black and white style of the base set. We also pulled green and bronze parallel these also feature different color background along with serial numbering which has been blocked out for future contests.

Rookies

The rookie cards in the Topps Gridiron Legends are the same design as the veterans and legends with the exception of RC moniker that is located directly above the players name. The rookie set features 55 of the top rookie subjects and in our box we pulled 37 of them with just about all of the bigger names represented.

Inserts

Topps Gridiron Legends features 3 insert sets:

Gridiron Legacies - We pulled 4 of the 25
Aspiring Legacies - We pulled 4 of the 36
Legendary Combos - We pulled 3 of the 25

All three of the insert sets feature a horizontal design and feature the same white background glossy finish. The portraits stand out nicely and all three sets stand out nicely. The insert sets are nicely done and adding subjects over subsets is a nice change of pace for collectors that don't typically build subsets. The line up of subjects in the insert set provides a nice selections of rookies, stars and legends.

Relics

Both of our Relic pulls come from the Aspiring Legacies Relics subsets. We pulled 2 decent up and coming running backs. The first relic of Stevan Ridley is the base variation. The Kendall Hunter is the Aspiring Legacies Relics Red subset which is numbered out of 99. The insert sets also feature a horizontal design and are of average thickness.

Autos

Our auto pulls featured a Autograph Rookie Card variation of Tyrod Taylor and a very nice on card 1956 Topps Reprint Autographed Cards of Lenny Moore. The 1956 reprints pay tribute to the players who debuted in the original 1956 Topps set. The 1956 Reprints is a 6 card set set and looking at the check list Moore looks to be one of the nicer hits of the subset.

Final Thoughts on 2011 Topps Gridiron Legends Football

My final thoughts on 2011 Topps Gridiron Legends Football is that Topps scores again with a release that is sure to appeal to multiple collectors. The artistry and photography is top of the line. In our box we pulled 107 of the 165 card base set with only 1 duplicate card. This release has something for all collectors, rookie hunters, star and legend collectors as well. With a retail price around $70 Topps delivers a fun affordable product that will appeal to set builders and football collectors across the board. This release should fill a void for Legendary player collectors. As we've seen in recent the football market has shifted heavily towards the games top rookies and established stars. It's nice to see another release that pays tribute to some of the all time great players of the game. It will be interesting to see if this format takes off and if we'll see more Legendary releases that will continue to excite team and old time player collectors a like.

The check list for 2011 Topps Gridiron Legends Football is loaded with top rookies and highly sought after legends. in addition to the great line up of Legends in this release the 1956 Topps Reprint Autographed Cards add nice touch to a great release. I'm a big fan of the reprint autograph sets and Topps reprints are always top of line. The 1956 reprints are no exception with nice clear on card autographs.

Here's how I would rate this product, based on what we experienced during our break
  • Value = 4
  • Innovation = 4
  • Fun and Experience = 5
  • Rebuy Value = 4
I rate this product an B+ for Topps.

Like the looks of the white background...to me it's a classic look. Pulled a lot of good RCs too. Like the Lenny Moore auto too...great box.

Very nice rookie pulls. Nice to see you got so many of them. Like the Lenny Moore as well. Gotta love a "legend" on-card auto.

Good looking cards. Love the vintage feel/look. It's great to see legends cards without having to buy a $5.00 box of 1990 topps.

Great review. I agree with some of the other comments about the classic look of the cards. It seems like you did get a lot of nice pulls as well. Excellent box value.
