Here's what I pulled in our box of 2010 Panini Plates & Patches.

Base Cards;

The base cards we pulled in our Plates and Patches break were Arian Foster and Chris Cooley. The base cards feature a glossy, in action portrait displayed on a dark almost a wood grain background. The Plates and Patches insignia and team logo is imprinted in a red chrome foil finish that accentuates the cards very nicely. All of the base cards in this release are sequentially numbered to 499. The common base set features 100 cards in total and includes all of today’s top players. The horizontal design of the card along with finishing touches adds a nice touch to the overall design and definitely stands out as a higher end release.

Inserts and Parallels;

Our insert pull comes from the Honors insert subset and is numbered out of 299. The Honors subset features 25 subjects and the cards are seeded 1 per box. The design of the honors set is similar to the base set with the horizontal picture. The main differences the white finish and the team logo on the right hand side of the card. On the left hand side of the card features gold writing set on a dark brown finish that resembles a piece of pigskin from a football.

On our parallels we beat the odds and pulled an extra parallel. Our parallel pulls were an Infinity Silver variation of David Garrard numbered out of 100 and an Infinity Gold variation of Brandon Marshall numbered out of 50. The parallel variations are identical to the base set out side of the foil color and numbering.

Game Used;

The Game Used pull is also a parallel variation of the common base set. We pulled card number 37 Andre Johnson of the Infinity Jersey subset numbered to 299. The card features a white jersey in place of the team logo on the left hand side of the card and a copper finish to the foil. While the design of the card is excellent it would had have nice to pull a patch card opposed to a white swatch.

Autographs;

Our autograph pulls were all rookie autos. In our box we pulled base autos of Carlton Mitchell and Patrick Robinson. The base rookie autos have the same design of the common set with a clear sticker auto in the left hand corner of the card.

The best hit of the box was actually the box topper from our box. Our autographed prime memorabilia rookie auto was Rob Gronkowski. The prime auto comes encased in a magnetic card holder with a Panini sticker to across the top of the one touch holder. Our pull certainly did not disappoint as you can see from the scan above the card features a trapped sticker autograph below a sick three color patch that includes multiple seams and lots of stitching. It definitely stands out as of one the nicest patches I’ve pulled to date.

Final Thoughts on 2010 Panini Plates & Patches Football;

2010 Panini Plates and Patches takes one of Panini’s most popular insert subsets and turns it in to what is sure to be a huge hit with football collectors. While the SRP of $150 would place this the higher-end releases. Boxes can be found in the $130 range on-line and at some local shops. This release will be ideal for collectors that are chasing the big hit or have little to no use for base cards. When looking at what the product delivers in terms of hits I’d say it’s priced in line with other premium sets. The upside is the break itself. It starts with a beautiful sealed black box, once the seal is broken your box topper awaits. The topper in our box was outstanding and definitely had the feel of a high end release. Once the topper was removed it was on the hand packed pack of cards. Something about opening a hand packed box just seems to add to the excitement.

The overall design of the release is excellent and while our pulls weren’t huge the break experience was very enjoyable. We pulled quality cards all the way through, with the Gronkowski being our top pull. The only real downside to this release would be the sticker autos over hard sign cards and the lack of color on our game used pull. That being said I’m sure if every pull was a multi-colored patch and the autographs were all on card it would have an adverse effect on the cost per box. With that said I think Panini delivers a well priced product with a good chance to pull something incredible for the cost. While I personally don’t open that many higher end releases I could see another box of Plates and Patches being opened in the near future. As a big fan of the Gridiron Gear Plates and Patches subset I would have to say that Panini did one of our favorite subsets proud by creating this release.

  • Innovation = 4
  • Fun and Experience = 5
  • Rebuy Value = 4

I rate this product "A" for Panini.

I like the horizontal cards and the Gronk patch. I'd like to see them devote more of the card to the player/photography instead of the card and team logo, though.

Wow, great hit on the patch. The standard autos are not the best I have seen. Why is this coming out so late in the season?
