Here's what we pulled in our box of 2010 Topps Platinum Football.
Base Cards;
Nice simple elite design and foil board technology, basically the same as last year, which is a good thing. The front simply has the product name and players name, team and the product name. The back has a short bio along with interesting information about the player. We only saw a couple duplicates, so the set should be fairly easy to complete. There are no base parallels in this set.
Rookie and Rookie Parallel Cards;
The rookies are of the same design, but are a chrome version compared to the base veteran foilboard. Tons of rookies in this box! Two to three rookies per pack. 53 rookies of some form...here's the breakdown;
- (3) rookie variation, holographic foil
- (2) refractor /999
- (45) regular rookies
- (1) auto patch rookie
- (1) auto
- (1) auto black refractor
The autographed cards we pulled are all of high-quality. From the card itself all the way through the autographs and their placement on the stickers. The players we pulled are Mike Kafka (2) of the Philadelphia Eagles, by way of Northwestern and Mardy Gilyard of the St. Louis Rams via Cincinnati. The Kafka auto patch is a very sweet card as the patch is 2 colors and it seems to be from a patch. The auto patch is numbered out of /800 and the regular Kafka is numbered out of /999. The Gilyard is a black refractor numbered out of /99.
Final Thoughts on 2010 Topps Platinum Football;
2010 Topps Platinum Football is quickly becoming a favorite of collectors. The three guaranteed autographs help get Platinum football into one of the elite releases of the year. You can't complain about how many rookies you get in this box. If Bowman is the home of the rookies, then Platinum is a high-rise condo of rookies. (52) rookies of one variation or another is unheard of, except for Platinum. The chrome technology on the rookies is superb.
The draw backs for me was a duplicate player in the autographs. Even though they are totally different cards, I would have liked three distinct autographs from the box.
And, I would have liked to have seen more RC refractors in the box and that would have put it over the top for me.
These boxes can usually be had for between $71 and $102 on most sites that I have checked. The $71 was on ebay and was a great buy at that price point.
Here's how I would rate this product, based on what we experienced during our break;
