Here's what we pulled in our box of 2009 Donruss Gridiron Gear Football.

Base and Insert Cards;

The 2009 Donruss Gridiron Gear Football logo is in the top left on most of the cards, along with the players name and team. The cards sort of remind me of the fleer ultra releases. While the player does pop off of the card with the design, I would like to see more of the background in the picture. Also, the stats are of last year only along with total stats since coming in the NFL. After the bio is a short fact about the player from the previous season.

The inserts we pulled are;
  • Player Timeline - Kellen Winslow Jr. /250 - Malcolm Kelly /100
  • "X" Matt Schaub Gold /100
  • "X" DeSean Jackson Platinum /25
  • Rivals - Terence Newman + Clinton Portis

Rookie and Parallel Cards;

The rookie cards and parallel rookies are of the exact same design as the base. The rookie designation is right across the top of the card in can't miss white text. Rookie stats are from previous season and collegiate totals. Here is the breakdown;
  • (4) base rookies /999 - Gibson - Hill - Byrd - Moore
  • (2) Silver "X" /250 - Moore - Edison
  • (1) Gold "X" /100 - Mitchell
  • (1) Next Generation - /100 - Pettigrew

Game-Used Cards;

The (3) event used we pulled are very solid, quality pulls. The Performers card of Stephen McGee has a nice prime piece of jersey with tons of stitching to go along with the football piece. The card is #d out of 50. The next generation triple piece is of Derrick Williams of the Detroit Lions, Mike Wallace of the Pittsburgh Steelers and Ramses Barden of the New York Giants. The card is #d out of 250. The final piece is a large swatch from rookie Glen Coffee of the San Francisco 49ers and it's #d /50.

Final Thoughts on 2009 Donruss Gridiron Gear Football;

This is my first box of Gridiron Gear that I have reviewed. While the event worn cards are very nice and of high-quality, a lot of collectors would have liked to have seen actual game-used in the product. Also, I think a guaranteed autograph per box would help qualify value for this product. We did not pull a high-profile rookie from this year, but you never know! For me, not enough rookies in the box either. If you are a set maker / collector this may be a nice set to try and complete.

These boxes can usually be had for between $52 and $82 on most sites that I have checked. The $50 to $60 mark seems to be a good value for this new Panini product.

Here's how I would rate this product;
  • Value = 4
  • Innovation = 3
  • Fun and Experience = 4
  • Rebuy Value = 4
I rate this product an "B-" for Panini America Inc.!

Thanks to Panini for giving TR the opportunity to break this box.
I really liked the design of this set. I wish there was an auto in the box. but for the price, this appears to be a good box.

Nice review. I like the rivals cards, but don't like the next generation GU cards with players from different teams.

I like the card design this year. I was dissapointed in the packs I bought (2 Base packs), but will most likely get some more to see if I can get a Rookie or something.

Thanks for the review.

I like the presentation of these cards, especially the jersey cards. I just wish there were not so many event used cards. I would also like more of a mixture of game items, such as hats, footballs, pylons, etc. The "O" return is nice too.

Great Review! The patch cards in the box were very good hits and the rest of the cards were pretty decent also. Too bad no high profile rookie, although Coffee had some potential earlier in the season.

Nice review of a very nice box of cards. I think it's good that they are pretty simple looking without all kinds of patterns all over. It's easy to just focus on the players and see what they look like.
