2009 Topps Magic Football
2009 Topps Magic Football is a first year product that does come across in a BIG way with (3) autographed cards per box. I think this is the way to go with the mid-range boxes to get more buyers.
Set Features;
Topps pays tribute to its first nationally distributed football set - 2009 Topps Magic Football. Called "Magic" because each card had a rub-off portion on the back that revealed an answer to a trivia question, these cards featured all the college stars of 1951, and marked Topps debut into the football category.Each sealed box contains 24 packs of 7 cards each in a 250 card set (all players depicted in their college uniforms) including 50 short prints. >>> Each box contains THREE Autograph cards. Parallel sets: Mini 1:1 and Autograph 1:8. Inserts: All-Americans, Alumni (also Autograph version: Dual > #`d to 25 and Triple > #`d to 25), Magic Thrills, `48 Magic (also Autograph > #`d to 10), and original 1951 Topps Magic BuyBack cards (randomly inserted).
Here's what we pulled in our box of 2009 Topps Magic Football.
The 2009 Topps Magic Football logo is in the upper left or right hand corner on the base and the rookies. Some of the parallels have it located in various other spots. Other than the logo the only thing on the front is a black title block with name, position and college school nickname (Matt Ryan "Eagles"). The back of the cards has a miminal bio along with some stats of the players' college days. Below that there is a question pertaining to the player pictured and a rub-off section below to reveal the answer. A very nice little something different from Topps and not the norm as most product. Here's a listing of the inserts and parallels we pulled...
- (3) Magic Thrills
- (4) 1948 Magic
- (3) All-American
- (2) Alumni
- (13) Regular Minis
- (1) Black Minis
Rookie and Parallel Cards;

The rookie cards are of the exact same design as the base. The thing I don't like is that it is very hard to know who's a rookie, as there isn't a RC designation on the cards. We pulled (31) regular rookie cards, (5) regular mini RC and (1) black mini RC. I do like the rookie players in their college uniforms as they haven't really earned an NFL jersey yet.
Autographed Cards (3) Per Box;

The autographs are of the same design as the base rookie cards, except for the area above the name for the stickered autographs. The autographed cards we pulled are of Leon Washington, DeSean Jackson and Kory Sheets. The autographs don't have any bubbling or breaks, and the autographs are completely on sticker with no trailing off at all on any of them.
Final Thoughts on 2009 Topps Magic Football;
Very nice quality product from Topps in the mid-range price range. It's great to see (3) autographs in a product of this type. We didn't have much luck in the players we pulled though. I would have liked to have seen at least one Group "A" or Group "B" in every box for value +. But in the same vein I can understand, and do know, that it's the luck of the draw on every break. I thought it was awful strange too that I didn't pull any #d cards in the box. These boxes can usually be had for between $60 and $80 on most sites that I have checked.
Another great product for the TTM/IP guys!!!
Here's how I would rate this product;
- Value = 4.0
- Innovation = 5
- Fun and Experience = 4
- Rebuy Value = 3.5
I rate this product an "B+" for Topps!
