Gridiron Gear debate
I went to a local shop today to buy myself something new, Gridiron Gear was in so I said why not. The guy right before me cracked his box, it was a hot box, 12 GU/Patches and a pack with 3 autographed rookies in it. Other than a Vince Young dual patch (numbered to 50 I think) his box was pretty much crap guys.
I busted mine and had the three hits in the first four packs, nice cards, but no big name hit (AJ Hawk dual GU patch, Bob Griese GU and Lorenzo Booker triple patch auto - nice but not going to be worth that much). The guy bought another box and I was suckered into another as well.
After four boxes we didn't hit a single first round pick until my second to last pack - I got an Adrian Peterson event worn card, and low and behold it was damaged.
I think this is really questionable for such a high priced box, going down to 3 hits a box (last year I thought was four - I could be wrong) - and those hits are really crap.
I don't like to spend my hard earned money when I get cards of guys who are sixth or seventh round drafts picks (although QB/WR/RB aren't always bad), not always even in the NFL and poor condition of the cards.
Just looking to see how others saw the product and what they think.

And that is why I don't open wax anymore. Even if you do get the hits its of someone you've never heard of or don't care about. I always resist the temptation to do it by looking at how much a box costs and going over and looking at the shops autos and seeing which ones I'd want - knowing I can actually go home with them.
But busting wax is gambling - and there are lots of people that need that rush. I've seen people tearing through wax in shops and leaving with what amounted to crap. And I felt sorry for them.
And next week they're right back in there. Doing the same thing. Busting wax and complaining about how UD is ripping off the customer with this and that. And I think they're stupid after not learning they are most likely going to get burned.
And next week they're right back in there. And I laugh.
I know this doesn't answer the question outright but it does in other ways. You get what you pay for and that is the possible thrill of getting that Adrian Peterson Auto. Which probably could have been bought with the money spent on wax - and a few other things. A Catch-22 for box busters - a gold mine for us who buy singles.

It is nice looking, but I agree. I had a guy in front of me get a hot box also. I pulled a nice Patch of Boldin (maybe will be worth $10) and a Johnnie Lee Higgins AU /25 again not worth much. The condition of the cards were better than LCM but not much. I'm going to contact Donruss, although they are probably sick of hearing from me with all the LCM complaints I had.

I have stopped breaking boxes all together. I figure why waste $100 when I can go and buy the cards I need off ebay for $5-10 at the most for jersey cards. Breaking boxes are only worth it if you pull a guy like Peterson. I don't feel like wasting my money on a box to get jerseys of guys like Jon Kitna, Chad Johnson, and some no name 5th round pick.

When I read this last night I would have agreed with many of the points, but after my trip to the card shop this morning it's tougher.
I opened 1 box and 6 packs and pulled the following:
Calvin Johnson- Rookie Gems- Pull Out Auto/Jersey # 039/100 (was in 1 of the 6 packs)
Greg Olsen- Rookie Gems- Dual Patch/Ball/Auto (6 Colors) # 09/50
Garrett Wolfe- RC Gems- Dual Patch/Ball/Auto (4 Colors) # 28/50
Tony Dorsett- Performers- Dual Patch (3 Colors) # 20/50
Bart Starr- Performers- Jersey # 187/250
Larry Fitzgerald- Player Timeline- Pitt Jersey # 28/50

If it doesn't say # 1/1 on the card, then it's not a 1/1.
Just because it says # 1/xx on the card, doesn't mean it's the first one made, just the first one numbered.

WOW, that is one nice box! I have now heard of several hot boxes, that one though was truly a hot box!
I would be interested in the Olsen and Wolfe, let me know if I have anything you are interested in.
thanks,
Ken

i'm telling, something is up with donruss...if you remember back to last month i had a big issue with a bunch of dud boxes from absolute.
donruss was quick to resolve the issue, but you know for damn sure they would never put 2 adrian peterson gu/auto's in a box, but i sure did pull two reggie ball's and charlier frye's.

i basically wrote a letter explaining the issues and attached a sheet with the box by box contents.
for the damaged cards they did a good job with replacing them with similar or greater value cards. as far as the larger issue of doubles and missing autos, they simply replaced them with two base rc auto's which i do not feel is an adequate resolution, considering i opened 3 boxes.
i was impressed with the turn around time, 2 1/2 weeks from mailing. faster than anything i've ever seen from upper deck.
