Isaac Bruce to Wear Jerry Rice’s No. 80, 03/10/2008
Fourteen-year wide receiver Isaac Bruce, who spent his entire career with the Rams before being released in February, will wear the No. 80 when he takes the field for the San Francisco 49ers this fall. Somehow, despite Jerry Rice’s being the best receiver in NFL history, he is not one of the 10 players and one coach to have their numbers anointed in untouchable, unwearable history, although no player has worn it since Rice retired. Not surprisingly, Jerry is being more of an adult about this than I am, having granted his permission for Bruce to wear his number.
