Peyton Manning still not ready

Peyton Manning, still recovering from offseason surgery on his neck, reportedly won't be ready for the start of training camp.

The Indianapolis Star, citing an unnamed source familiar with the quarterback's health situation, reported that Manning won't be ready to participate with the rest of his Indianapolis Colts teammates July 31, when the team is scheduled to begin camp in Anderson, Ind.

Manning is rehabbing from his second neck-related surgery in 15 months. The two procedures were not related, Manning has said. The March 2010 surgery eradicated a buildup of calcium in his neck; this year's surgery corrected a disk problem.

According to the Star, it is unknown how much of the Colts' training camp Manning might miss. The quarterback first has to meet with the team's medical staff, something he hasn't been able to do because of the NFL lockout.

The 35-year-old Manning received the Colts' franchise tag in February after completing a seven-year, $98 million deal with the team. He has not signed the tender, but the Colts have said they planned to offer a deal that would make him the league's highest-paid quarterback once the league's labor issues were resolved.

Manning, a four-time NFL MVP, has played in 208 consecutive regular-season games.

In 13 seasons, he has broken all of the franchise's career records for quarterbacks and has never missed a start. He's taken the Colts to the playoffs 11 times, captured seven AFC South titles in eight years, won two AFC championships, one Super Bowl title and a Super Bowl MVP award.
