Here's what I pulled in our box of 2011 Topps Marquee Baseball.

BASE CARDS;

In our box we pulled 12 of the 100 card base set with 0 duplicates. The base cards are produced on a thicker stock than typical base sets and feature a glossy finish. The set features a nice mix of veteran stars and legendary icons. All of the portraits feature in action poses. The Topps Marquee insignia and players name are centered on the bottom of card.

PARALLEL BASE CARDS;

The parallel cards in 2011 Topps Marquee are listed as 1 per pack. The parallel cards are the same basic design of the base card with the exception of the serial numbering and the coloring of the Topps Marquee insignia. Of our 4 parallels we pulled 2 Blue variations, 1 Copper variations and 1 Gold variation.

RELIC CARDS;

Our relic pulls were a Titanic Jumbo Relics of David Wright numbered out of 50 and Single Player Quad Relic of Kelly Johnson numbered out of 199. The Johnson quad relic features a nice 3 color patch in the bottom left hand corner. While we can’t complain on the player hit on the jumbo relic it would have been to pull more multi-colored swatches. After seeing the 1 patch on the Kelly Johnson the Relics left me with a feeling of wanting more.

AUTOGRAPH CARDS;

Our box of Marquee featured 2 autograph pulls. The first one pictured above is our On-Card Autograph Card of Brett Wallace numbered out of 570. Wallace was a top prospect in the St. Louis Cardinal system that was the key piece of the Matt Holiday trade. Wallace was later traded to the Astros and finally called up to the majors as their starting first baseman. The second hit was an Acclaimed Impressions Autograph Multi-Relic Card of Trevor Cahill of the Oakland A’s. Cahill a former 2nd round draft pick looked to have a very bright future after posting 18 wins in 2010. Unfortunately Cahill took a bit of a step back in 2011 but remains a young starting pitcher to keep an eye on.

Final Thoughts on 2011 Topps Marquee Baseball;

Topps introduces Marquee Baseball designed to be a mid end product with something for all baseball collectors. I have to say as a concept I enjoyed the release and the opportunity to pull a monster hit. Looking at comparable breaks it seemed Marquee would live up to its name as several pulls have hit the market. Priced at roughly $150 a box Marquee is a bit of a gamble. I really like the design of the subsets as it appears to have a blended style from various past releases. The on card autos and multiple relics appeal to most autograph and relic collectors. The base and parallel sets have a nice look and feel to them as the thicker card stock really makes them stand out. I personally like the thicker card feel as it doesn’t appear as fragile and less likely to be damaged during the opening of the packs. Priced as a mid end release it’s probably not aimed at collectors on a budget. The lack of a big hit in our box would it tough to go back for another shot. That being said I could see Marquee translating nicely to other sports lines. A good mix of veteran players combined with iconic legends is always a product that will attract die hard collectors. While our box lacked a major pull I hope to see Marquee expand to other sports and make a triumphant return next season. Thanks to Topps for putting out a new release that is a fun, enjoyable and quick break with some great looking cards.

Here's how I would rate this product;
  • Value = 4
  • Innovation = 5
  • Fun and Experience = 5
  • Rebuy Value = 4

I rate this product "B+" for Topps.

Great quality product with very good hits, both memorabilia and autographs. A good product for high end collectors.

I really like the way that the older fashioned Babe Ruth cards and other vintage looking cards look. The combination jersey and autograph card is really a great card too!
