My Card Inventory

Default this irks me...

First off, I'm a Cardinals fan (and a SF Giants fan).

so i was wearing a Pujols jersey the other day. (Yeah, yah, he's not a Cardinal anymore, but it doesnt mean ill stop wearing his jersey.)
i'm at the grocery store.
this guy says to his wife "hey, look at this guy's jersey" [because they are Cardinals fans as well (which is kinda rare for my area to be a Cardinals fan - being 275 miles away and all...)]

anyways, the first thing he says to me is "So how long have you been a Cardinals fan?"
you could easily tell he was insinuating i was jumping on a bandwagon or something. especially the way he said "you." it really irked me (to say it nicely).

i quickly responded with "My whole life. My favorite player of all time is Willie McGee ... So how long have you been a fan of the Cardinals?"

i think he was shocked by the name i dropped (who IS my favorite baseball player of all time)
and he responded with Bob Gibson and Stan Musial (who i would have thought he would have been retired, before this guy was born...)

then he said he was surprised to see a Pujols jersey, and that he has to get rid of all of Pujols' stuff he owns, and that i should be doing the same.

and i said i wish Pujols well; he was an asset to the Cardinals, and i understand why he left.
then i shook my head and walked away from the guy.
(under my breath saying "psssh; suuuuuure you are a Cardinals fan")

i thought we'd be talking Cardinals baseball, which I never get to do.

i figured the first thing he would have said to me was "How about that World Series!"

instead,

i guess i should have been wearing my Willie McGee jersey that day, instead...

thanks for reading my rant!

I see Giants jerseys everywhere...of course, I live in San Francisco, so it makes sense, but I still wonder how many of these people jumped on the bandwagon in 2010. I've been a Giants fan since 1978, and my favorite player was Willie McCovey who I saw play at the end of his career.

I do think that you handled it well. I was crying at the World Series parade I was so happy, which might be an indicator that I am a long term fan.

I hear ya on that! on both topics.

like i said in my OP, I am a Cardinals AND a SF Giants fan.
I was thrilled 2 years in a row!
(and McGee, of course, played for both the Cardinals and the Giants!)
My dad grew up liking Mays. My brother grew up liking Will the Thrill
So, I grew up liking McGee and the Cardinals, as well as the Giants.

I was happy that, if the Giants couldn't repeat that it was the Cardinals. I was also happy that the Giants were the first team to inflict baseball-unhappiness on George W. Bush, the former idiot President, and that the Cards were the second team, and the Cards made it far more painful for him.

I still love that Cardinals team of the 80's, Willie McGee, Ozzie Smith, and Todd Zeile (that is all I can remember for now)

I still remember the Giants and Cards squaring off in 1987-1989. They didn't like each other. It's amazing how time mellows you out, and stuff that seemed important then isn't so important now.

Talk about mellowing out - I am an old Cubs fan and was living in Wisconsin when the Braves moved to Milwaukee - everyone in my family switched to the Braves but I remained a Cubs guy. Endured lots of comments, especially in 1957 and 1958, - but ---- the Cubs remain in Chicago while the Braves went and the Brewers came in. Davz13 - great job but many people remember only what you did for them today.
